Butterflies in Southern California
In order to maintain and hopefully increase the population of butterflies, you should find out which butterflies are found in your area and help those species by planting the correct host plants. Planting a butterfly garden filled with California natives and other butterfly attracting flora will not only benifit the butterflies that visit your garden, but will provide food for birds, insects and other wildlife.

If you want to grow native gardens with the intent of attracting some form of wildlife, such as rabbits, songbirds, bees or butterflies. you can choose plants that will attract them.
Be sure to have plants in your garden that provide a food source to a variety of adult butterflies year-round.
Also, and this is important: Pesticide kills beneficial insects, including the butterfly caterpillars. Try to avoid pesticide use.
