Swimming Pool to Rainwater Harvesting System in Manhattan Beach
In 2012, EnviroscapeLA began and completed converting a standard swimming pool into a Rainwater harvesting system in Manhattan Beach, California. This project came about because the homeowners realized that since the kids had grown up and moved away, they no longer needed or wanted to keep up the high maintenance costs of having a swimming pool. Costs of a swimming pool include regular maintenance visits which add costs for chemicals and cleaning, electrical costs of pumps, and the additional cost of keeping the water topped to appropriate levels due to solar evaporation. Lots of costs and very little value in return. Could there be value in just filling the pool with soil and be done with it? After careful research, the homeowners contacted EnviroscapeLA and agreed that the best solution was to convert their swimming pool into a rainwater harvesting system. As the name suggests, Rainwater that falls on the roof is filtered and then stored in the tanks installed in the pool for future irrigation reuse. How is the water aerated to keep it from turning rancid? A pondless waterfall was incorporated into the system to turn the water. A drip irrigation system was tied into the system, to maximize water usage. Lights and low water usage plants were added to make this one of LA’s premier outdoor living spaces. This EnviroscapeLA backyard is eco-friendly, green, and absolutely beautiful.
